1. Purpose

To make sure no one is affected by alcohol or drugs while working or living at the mine. Impairment kills people in heavy equipment, blasting and plant work.

2. Rules

Illegal drugsPossession, use or being affected is prohibited at all times.
Prescription and over-the-counter medicineTell the Clinic if your medicine could affect you. The Clinic will advise on fitness for work.
CannabisNot permitted, including where it is legal off site.
Fit for workYou must arrive fit to work. Being affected is a breach even if you have not used on site.

3. Testing

Breath alcohol of 0.02 g/100 mL or above is a non-negative result. The person stops work and is transported to the Clinic; they do not drive or operate equipment.

4. Positive result process

  1. Stop work and remain with a supervisor or security. Do not drive.
  2. A second test is done within 30 minutes to confirm.
  3. A confirmed positive is handled under HR-POL-005, with support from the Employee Assistance Program.
  4. First confirmed alcohol result: written warning, rehabilitation counselling and return-to-work plan. Illegal drug result or refusal to test: dismissal.

5. Help is available

If you are struggling with alcohol or drugs, ask for help before a test. Self-referral to the EAP is confidential and will not lead to discipline if made before a test or incident.
