Bins

A bin is one storage location: a shelf position, a rack slot, a floor spot, a dock lane. Every unit of stock in LogisticaHQ is in a bin (or on a pallet in a bin), so operators always know exactly where to go. Bins belong to a zone and follow its rules unless they have their own.

Create bins

Bins are created from their zone: open Setup > Warehouse > Warehouses, the warehouse, then the zone, and use the buttons of the Bins section.

The Bins section of zone A: Generate by name, Generate bins, Print and Delete, and the list of bins A-01-001, A-01-002 and so on

Generate many bins from a mask

Generate bins creates a whole range of bins in one go from a mask: the bin code with a placeholder for each part that changes.

  1. Click Generate bins. The mask is filled in with the zone's mask; change it if needed.
  2. For each placeholder, choose Numeric or Alphabetical and enter the first and last value.
  3. Click Submit. Every combination is created.

The Generate bins dialog with zone A mask, two numeric segments each from 1 to 3, which creates A-01-001 to A-03-003

MaskRangesBins created
A-{0:00}-{1:000}1 to 3, 1 to 2A-01-001, A-01-002, A-02-001, A-02-002, A-03-001, A-03-002
R{0:00}-{1}1 to 2, A to BR01-A, R01-B, R02-A, R02-B
DOCK-{0}1 to 4DOCK-1, DOCK-2, DOCK-3, DOCK-4
  • {0}, {1}, {2}… are the parts that change, numbered in the order they appear.
  • After the colon, zeros set the width of a number: {0:00} gives 01, 02…; {1:000} gives 001, 002…. Use it so bins sort in order.
  • An alphabetical part runs through single letters, A to Z.
  • The last part changes fastest, like an odometer.
  • Bins are created one by one. If one already exists, creation stops there: Bin [X] already exists; the bins created before it are kept.

Create bins one at a time

Generate by name creates a bin with the exact code you type. Press Enter after each code to keep the window open and create the next, which is quick when scanning codes from existing labels.

Rules for bin codes

  • Every bin code is unique across the company.
  • A bin code cannot start the same way as your pallet (LPN) codes, and cannot be the same as an existing pallet code, so a scan is never ambiguous.
  • A bin's code cannot be changed after it is created.

A bin's details

Click a bin code (in its zone or in Setup > Warehouse > Bins) to open it.

Bin D-01-E's details: code, sequence number, notes, allowed categories, warehouse, zone D By Lpn, total quantity, and its override settings, each set to Inherit

FieldWhat it does
Sequence numberThe bin's place in the picking walk. Picks are listed in sequence number order, then bin code. It does not change which bin stock is taken from, only the order of the walk. Numbers are compared as text, so pad them to the same length: 0010, 0020, not 10, 20, or 100 will come before 20.
NotesA note for people.
Allowed categoriesThis bin's own list of allowed product categories. Empty means the zone's list applies.
Dedicated product(Zones with dedicated product bins) The one product this bin holds. Set automatically by the first product put in it, or chosen here.
Min quantity, Max quantity(With a dedicated product) The bin's replenishment levels. The Bin min/max report lists bins below their minimum or above their maximum, and replenishment tops a bin up to its maximum. Enter a minimum lower than the maximum.
Total quantityThe stock in the bin now.

The Content, Details and Totes tabs show what the bin holds: by product, by lot, serial and expiry, and the totes staged there.

Overriding the zone

Administrators can give a bin its own rules. Each setting offers Yes, No or Inherit; Inherit follows the zone.

  • Quarantine bin: Yes keeps the bin's stock from being allocated even in a normal zone; No makes a bin in a quarantine zone allocatable.
  • Allow multiple products, client products, pack sizes, lots, expiries, LPNs and Packsize handling: the same rules as the zone, for this bin only.
  • Client assignment (tick Zone override): reserve this bin for one client.
  • Production auto source: for a bin in a production area.
  • Dimensions (tick Zone override): this bin's own size, for information.

The bin list

Setup > Warehouse > Bins lists every bin of every warehouse with its zone, sequence number and cube.

The bin list with columns Bin, Zone, Sequence number, Bin cube, Zone cube, Zone type and Warehouse

Set sequence numbers in bulk

  1. Prepare an Excel file whose first sheet has the columns Bin, Sequence, Length, Width and Height. Only Bin and Sequence are needed.
  2. Click Bin sequence, choose the file, and confirm Update bins sequence numbers?

Bins are matched by code; codes that do not exist are skipped. An empty Sequence clears the bin's sequence number; an empty or zero dimension leaves it unchanged.

Print bin labels

Tick the bins, in the bin list or in their zone, and click Print. Choose the printer and the number of copies. The label shows the bin code as a barcode, the zone and its handling type, in bin code order. The label design is the Bin template. See Templates and label design.

Delete bins

Administrators tick bins in their zone and click Delete. A bin that holds stock cannot be deleted: Cannot delete, contains inventory.
