Templates and label design

Every label LogisticaHQ prints, from a bin label to a pallet label or a carton label, is drawn from a template: a design that says where each barcode, text and logo goes and which data fills it. LogisticaHQ comes with a ready-made set, and you can change them, add your own, and set up compliance labels that print automatically for particular customers.

Open Setup > Printing > Templates.

The Templates list: each template with its name, description, type, the field it binds on, whether it is the default for its type, and when it was created

The templates you start with

Every company starts with 31 templates, most in several sizes: 2×1, 4×3 and 4×6 inches. The name says which label and which size, for example BinPrintView_4x6. The 4×3 template of each type starts as its default.

LabelSizes
Bin, License plate (pallet LPN)2×1, 4×3, 4×6
Product, Product pack size2×1, 4×3
Dock door, Pallet, Tote master (carton), Tote content4×3, 4×6
Extended product, Substitute, Tag, Print note4×3
Purchase order, Customer return, Truck load4×3
Letdown ticket, Pack size breakdown ticket, Work order, Production order, Production product4×3
Kit dispatch (surgical trays)4×3

Which template prints

Each kind of label (the template's Type, the same list as the printer roles on the Printers screen) prints with the one template marked Default for that type. The other templates of the same type are kept but not used. To print bin labels at 4×6 instead of 4×3, make BinPrintView_4x6 the default.

If a type has no default template, printing that label fails with No default templates defined. Keep one default for every type you print.

A template's details

Click a template's name to open it. Changes save as you type; there is no Save button.

The details of ToteMasterPrintView_4x3: name, description, object type, Default ticked, an empty Simple binding, and its one markup, default, opened to show its Markup and Data binding

FieldMeaning
Name, DescriptionHow the template is listed.
Object typeWhich kind of label it is. Fixed when the template is created.
DefaultTicked for the template that prints for this type. Ticking it clears Default on the type's other template.
Simple binding (Bind on)Empty for an ordinary template. For compliance labels, the field of the label's data that decides which design prints (see below).

Markups

A markup is one design of the label: the layout itself. A template has one markup, or several when it holds compliance designs. Each markup has:

  • Binding value, the box on the markup's row: default for the design used normally. For a compliance design, the values of the Bind on field it is for, separated by commas.
  • Markup: the design itself. Click Show on the markup's row to open it; it is edited in the label designer rather than by hand.
  • Data binding (optional): a SQL query that fetches extra data for the label, using @Id for the record being printed. Leave it empty to use the label's standard data.

Compliance labels for particular customers

Large retailers often require their own carton or pallet label. LogisticaHQ picks the right design automatically, per label, without anyone choosing it:

  1. Open the default template of the label type, for example the carton label (ToteMasterPrintView).
  2. In Simple binding, enter the field that tells customers apart, for example the customer's code.
  3. Keep the normal design as the markup with binding value default.
  4. Click Add to add a markup for the retailer, set its binding value to that customer's code (or several codes, separated by commas), and design it in the label designer.

When a carton label prints, LogisticaHQ reads the customer code from the label's data. If a markup lists that code, its design prints; otherwise the default design prints.

Design a label

Administrators open the Label designer from a template's details. It is a visual editor: drag text, barcodes, lines, boxes and images onto the label, set each item's data field, font and size, and save.

The Label Editor with the 4x3 carton label: the toolbar, the label with its data fields in brackets and the SSCC barcode, and the property panel

  • The toolbar adds items (Rectangle, Ellipse, Line, Text, Masked Text, Image, Barcode), zooms, arranges them (Send to back, Bring to front), locks them, and copies, pastes or deletes them. Shortcuts lists the keyboard shortcuts; the arrow keys nudge the selected item.
  • Data fields are shown in brackets, such as [ShipToName] or [PoNumber]: at print time each is replaced by that value of the record being printed.
  • The property panel on the right sets the selected item, or with nothing selected the label itself: its height and width in inches, darkness, gaps and labels per row.
  • Save stores the design in the template. Export downloads it; Open loads a design file.
  • Design at the size of the label stock in the printer.
  • Labels print at the printer's own resolution, so set the right DPI for each printer on the Printers screen.
  • Print a test label after every change, and check that barcodes scan.

Your LogisticaHQ partner can design or adjust labels for you, including retailer compliance labels.

Create or delete a template

  • New (administrators only) creates a template: enter its name and description and choose its object type, then add its markup.
  • The red × deletes a template after you confirm. Do not delete the default template of a type you print.
