Product Categories

Product Categories and Sub-Categories

Product Categories give you a two-level way to classify your product catalog: a Category at the top level and one or more Sub-Categories underneath. Use them to organize Products by type or line -- for example, Category: Electronics, Sub-Category: Smartphones.

Categories are separate from Product Groups, which control GL account mapping and pricing rules. You can assign both a Category and a Group to the same product -- they serve different purposes.

Tips

  • You cannot delete a Category that still has Sub-Categories or Products assigned to it. Reassign or delete those first.
  • Sub-categories cannot be deleted while Products are still linked to them.
  • Categories are for organizing your catalog and Reports -- use Product Groups if you need to control which GL accounts are posted when a product is sold or purchased.
